The VAC/GMHC has adopted policies of equal opportunity & affirmative action in employment.
This means that in the employment of personnel, the organisation complies with the equal opportunity law, and follows guidelines suggested by the Equal Opportunity Commission of Victoria, to avoid discriminating against job applicants on the basis of their sex, race, age, or other irrelevant characteristics.
The VAC/GMHC sought and gained an exemption from the Equal Opportunity Act for an affirmative action policy. This means that for some positions (such as peer education and outreach workers) the organisation will seek to appoint a candidate who, all other selection criteria being approximately equally met, has HIV/AIDS or who is an experienced member of a community most affected by HIV/AIDS (eg. the gay community, injecting drug users).
This is part of the organisation’s commitment to work together with the affected communities as equals, and to provide expert services & programs, delivered in culturally appropriate ways.
