Become a volunteer
Over 250 volunteers help with the day-to-day work of our organisation. We value their energy, enthusiasm and ideas. Volunteering can give you a chance to learn new skills and make a difference to people’s lives.
We are always looking for volunteers with all types of skills and abilities to work with us in a range of areas.
Information sessions
Find out about what's involved in volunteering with us and the positions available by coming to an information session.
The next sessions will be held on the following dates:
- Thursday 26 April 12 noon to 1pm and 6pm to 7pm
- Wednesday 25 July 6pm to 7pm
- Thursday 26 July 12 noon to 1pm
- Wednesday 17 October 6pm to 7pm

Volunteer positions and training
All volunteers are also required to attend an initial orientation training day after attendance at an information session. Training is held on a Saturday 9.30 to 4pm.
In 2012, training will be held on the following dates:
- Saturday 12 May
- Saturday 4 August
- Saturday 27 October
Below is a list of our organisation's programs and the volunteer roles we have available within them.
Community Support Program
We offer placements for tertiary students completing a diploma or degree in community services, community development or welfare. Students can participate in all aspects of the program, including:
- Direct care/group activities: provide social, emotional and practical support
- Drivers - take clients to and from medical appointments. You must have your own vehicle (travel costs are reimbursed).
Positive Living Centre
- Pantry - help coordinate this grocery shopping program
- Kitchen hands - help with food preparation, washing dishes, and general kitchen duties for lunches on Tuesdays and dinners on Thursdays
- Operations - help with day-to-day activities around the centre
- Handy persons - general maintenance duties around the centre
- Reception - provide front-of-house customer service
- Peer support - facilitate groups and provide mentoring for people living with HIV/AIDS (you must be HIV positive for this program)
- Complementary therapists - provide services to people living with HIV/AIDS (you must have an Australian-recognised complementary therapy qualification)
- Activities - help with group activities and outings.
HIV/AIDS Legal Centre
- Solicitors, law students - provide legal advice on issues relating to HIV/AIDS
Counselling Services
- Counsellors - provide counselling sessions for clients on a range of issues including living with HIV, sexuality and coming out, grief and loss and safe sex (you must be a qualified counsellor)
Health Promotion
- Packing safe sex packs - help us prepare to distribute products at venues and special events
- Outreach team - volunteer to do outreach online, in sex-on-premises venues or at special events like Pride and Midsumma
- Peer education facilitators - facilitate groups and workshops for gay men
Corporate Services
- Night Managers - staff the VAC/GMHC reception in the evenings, provide general administrative support
- Fundraising - help with activities and events including making red ribbons and collecting for World AIDS Day
